Cleavers is the herb this entire category is built on. Every drops brand has it. Every gummy brand has it. I assumed it was all the same ingredient.
It is not.
Think about the difference between a tomato from somebody's backyard garden and the pale pink one wrapped in plastic at the gas station. Same word. Same produce aisle. One has flavor, nutrients, color. The other was bred for shelf life and shipping speed.
Cleavers works the same way. Wild cleavers grows on its own, competes for survival, and produces higher concentrations of the compounds that do the work. Farmed cleavers is planted in rows, harvested on a schedule, and grown for volume, not potency.
I looked at the drops I had been taking. Four herbs, all listed under a "proprietary blend." No source. No country of origin. No indication whether the cleavers was wild, farmed, organic, or grown in a greenhouse on the other side of the world.
Same name on the label. Completely different product inside.
But that was only the first problem.
The drops had four botanicals, all from the same old herbal family. Even if their cleavers was potent, even if it was wild, those four herbs only do one of the three jobs your body needs to clear swelling.
Swelling is not one problem. It is three. The fluid has to move. It has to drain out. And the tissue has to stop leaking fluid back in faster than you can clear it.
Their bottle covers the first job. Move it. That is it.
No diuretic. Nothing telling your body to actually release the held fluid. No enzyme. Nothing addressing the tissue inflammation that lets fluid leak into the tissue in the first place.
Cheap cleavers from an unknown source, covering one job out of three, hidden behind a label I could not verify.
The drops company did not tell me where their cleavers came from because they did not want me to ask. That is not a mistake. That is a business decision. Farmed cleavers is cheaper. Proprietary blends hide the dose. And if nobody reads the label closely, nobody notices.
I noticed.
